How to move forwards as a qualitative researcher in times of social distancing?

We urgently need social research to explore the lived experience of these challenging times and to gather the insights to support wellbeing, to understand emerging and exacerbated social inequalities, to highlight flows of information and misinformation and to track the emergence of new loci of power. However, many of the established methods of qualitative research are currently impossible due to restrictions on face-to-face interaction.

Online interactions offer ways to supplement and replace the face-to-face fieldwork currently on hold and to engage with emerging forms of sociality. Nonetheless, we need to think carefully about how to navigate online space as researchers and how to interpret the interactions we find there.

The webinar will explore the various notions of fieldwork and fieldsites that online spaces offer and open up discussion about strategies to allow qualitative researchers to aid in interpreting what online interactions mean to people.
